creaturesque - tentacular [2008-11]

A series of three representations of the Creaturesque Tentacular images.

Twist is an anamorphic distortion of fantastical portraits of queer bodies. It is an é chappé - a breakaway, a momentary vantage point or ode of viewing that illuminates the image, changes the perspective in a new, clarifying light. Biased, perverted, deformed or twisted - these are ways to describe both the presentation of the work and the work itself.

The images are layered drawings, digitally imposed onto original photographs as fantastic, evolving queer bodies - our own creation myths. The resulting prints are then mathematically distorted based on polar coordinates. The final print is mounted with a reflective, mylar cylinder in the center, which is filled with discarded drawings on skin-like, oiled Nepalese paper. The actual, printed image is nearly indecipherable, but when the viewer looks at the cylinder's outer surface, she can see a reflected image of the drawings in their "non-distorted," original form. In this, the only way the viewer can see the "actual" image is as a reflection of a distortion.
